Through rose-colored glasses: Alpine rose blossoms in Warth-Schröcken.
When the mountains glow pink.
There are moments in summer when the mountains of Warth-Schröcken are transformed into a veritable sea of flowers. When the air smells of fresh grass, the sun shines gently on the peaks, and a pink carpet suddenly appears among the rocks and mountain meadows, then the time for the alpine rose to bloom has arrived.
The bright red and pink flowers of the alpine rose—botanically known as Rhododendron ferrugineum—are a real eye-catcher. At altitudes of about 1,500 to 2,200 meters, they adorn the slopes, painting the mountainsides in delicate hues and creating wonderful contrasts against the green meadows and rugged cliffs. Anyone hiking through the Alps right now sees the mountain world through rose-colored glasses.

Blossoms at every step.

On easy hiking trails, such as those around the Hochtannberg Pass, or on relaxed panoramic walks at higher altitude, the vibrant sea of blossoms can be beautifully combined with the gentle alpine scenery.

A special highlight during this time are the blooming alpine meadows, which reveal their full splendour of colours until the first mowing. In the meadows of Warth-Schröcken, gentians, bellflowers, daisies and countless other alpine flowers are in bloom – a true sea of colours that reaches its peak slightly later than in the lower valleys. Those who stroll through the meadows at this time experience a small natural wonder: the full diversity of alpine flowers in one place, framed by the impressive mountain peaks.

Tips for the perfect alpine rose hike:
- Best time: late June to early July, in the morning or late afternoon for particularly soft light.
- Good spots: Hochtannberg Pass, Kalbelesee, Körbersee, the Steffisalp-Express mountain station towards Hochalphütte, Auenfeld, Widderstein.
- Equipment: sturdy footwear, water bottle, a snack, sun protection, a jacket, and a camera or phone for rosy snapshots.
- Special experience: combine the hike with a stop at an alpine pasture or mountain hut and enjoy regional specialties made from local produce.
Wild plants must not be deliberately damaged or destroyed. Please refrain from picking or collecting alpine roses – they are protected under general plant conservation laws and are “mildly toxic” (their leaves and nectar contain grayanotoxins).

When the Alps come alive.
From July onwards, the cows return to the alpine pastures, which have had a quiet bloom during the early summer weeks. They graze among the colorful flowers, the sound of cowbells accompanies your hike, and the Alps come alive in full vibrancy. Those who wish can visit one of the rustic alpine huts and enjoy a hearty snack, fresh milk, or homemade cake – right in the middle of blooming meadows and grazing cows. This makes the hike a true sensory experience and a delicious mountain moment for the whole family or hiking group.
More than just blossoms.

Sometimes, it is precisely these colors that take your breath away – and bring a smile to your face.
