Mountain tour to the best coffee in the world.
A sunrise hike to Widderstein in Warth-Schröcken is a truly unique alpine experience – and the coffee tastes unforgettable up here!
The Widderstein.
At 2,530 metres, it is not only a striking, freestanding rock summit but also a prime viewpoint with panoramic views – from Lake Constance to the Lechtal Alps, from the Kleinwalsertal to the main Alpine ridge. It’s no wonder that it’s a coveted destination for alpine hikers. But we wanted more: to reach the summit at sunrise – and enjoy a freshly brewed espresso while we were there.

A Departure into Silence.
It is pitch dark as we switch on our headlamps shortly after four in the morning. With a quiet click, light floods out, the beam sweeping across the narrow path in front of the Widdersteinhütte. At 2,000 metres, the air is clear, almost cool – perfect for getting into the rhythm of the climb.
Silently, we ascend through the meadow slopes, each lost in our own thoughts. 500 vertical metres still lie ahead. The app has calculated the exact sunrise time; breaks are a luxury. Yet that’s part of the thrill: the suspense of whether we’ll reach the top in time.
The Mountain Awakens.
Slowly, in the twilight, the outline of Widderstein emerges. What appears insurmountable from below turns out to be a well-marked, though steep, path. The trail winds over rocks, switchbacks, and ledges, leading ever upward. We feel the effort, the sweat on our brows, the heaviness in our legs – yet it’s exactly this sensation we were seeking.
Then finally: the last few metres, the final breaths. Suddenly, it’s there – the summit. We are alone. Not a sound, except for the wind.
Espresso at 2,530 Metres.
The sun breaks over the mountains, bathing sky and peaks in liquid gold. This is the moment that makes every step worthwhile.
We place the small espresso maker on the gas stove, and the water begins to sing. The aroma of coffee mingles with the fresh mountain air. One sip – strong, hot, unforgettable. The best coffee in the world, not because of its origin, but because of the place, the moment, the shared experience.
The Descent Full of Ease.
As we start our return, the day lies at our feet. Valleys and peaks stretch out below us, each step lighter than the last. On a small rock ledge, we pause to take a photo – the panorama looks like a painting.
And somewhere among the switchbacks, it becomes clear: this espresso was more than a drink. It was a symbol of what a mountain tour can be – an adventure, a gift, an unforgettable moment.

On the way back, there’s time for a special moment – from the small rock ledge, the breathtaking panorama stretches out at our feet.
